CD-EPT Commercial Driver English Proficiency Test

A spoken English assessment your Trainees take in a web browser. An AI examiner holds a live voice conversation modeled on a roadside inspection, and a person on our team reviews every result before it is final.

Assessment aligned with 49 CFR § 391.11(b)(2).

The test screen: the examiner asks the Trainee where they are headed today and what they are hauling, with a live transcript beside it.

What the conversation covers

The test plays out like a roadside inspection. The examiner asks, listens and follows up, in English only, about the everyday work of driving a commercial vehicle. Plan for about 15 minutes per Trainee.

Topics the examiner can raise include:

  • Their documents
  • Their trip and route
  • Duty status and hours
  • Their vehicle and its condition
  • What they are hauling
  • What they would do in an emergency
  • Reading road signs

The examiner follows your Trainee's answers, so there is no script to memorize. The best preparation is everyday English about the job: their documents, their truck, their load and the road.

How a test goes for the Trainee

The Trainer assigns the test. The Trainee takes it in a web browser with a camera and a microphone. It is not available in the mobile app.

  1. Step 1: System check

The camera, microphone, speaker and network are checked first. The Trainee then reads a recording notice and gives consent; without consent the test does not start. If the Trainer requires it, an identity check comes next.
  2. Step 2: The conversation

A live voice conversation with the AI examiner, with a transcript on screen as it goes. Along the way the examiner shows road signs and asks what they mean.
  3. Step 3: Results

Scores are shown once the review is done. When our reviewer approves a pass, the Trainee sees a score for each dimension, can download the results as a PDF, and a certificate is issued.

Sample exchange

  1. ExaminerGood afternoon. Can I see your license and your medical card, please?
  2. TraineeYes, here they are. The medical card is good until next spring.
  3. ExaminerThank you. How long have you been driving today?
  4. TraineeAbout four hours. I started early this morning, after my break.
  5. ExaminerAnd if you smelled smoke from the trailer, what would you do?
  6. TraineePull over somewhere safe, turn on the flashers and call it in.
Made up to show the format. In a real test the examiner follows up on what the Trainee says.

A results screen: Test Passed, overall score 4.2 out of 5.0, and a score for each dimension with a radar chart.
The results screen: the overall score and a score for each dimension.
  • Results, scores and the full transcript of the conversation.
  • Playback of the recorded audio and video, and the still photos.
  • The consent record for each test.
  • A compliance packet for your files, and a certificate for each approved pass.

Test records are visible to Trainers in the Trainee's organization who have reporting access.

A person reviews every result

The AI examiner runs the conversation and AI drafts the score. Every scored test then goes to a person on our team, who approves it as a pass, rejects it as a fail or asks for a retake, with a reason. The AI does not make the final decision.

The test is a pre-screening tool. It does not certify or disqualify anyone, and its result does not bind a roadside inspector or enforcement officer, who make their own determinations.

Built for a fair test, and careful with the recording

Integrity

  • The camera stays on: the conversation is recorded as audio and video.
  • Still photos are taken about every 15 seconds during the test.
  • Trainees take the test themselves, alone, without assistance.
  • Switching away from English is flagged for the reviewer.
  • An identity check can be required before the test. It is run by Stripe Identity: a photo of the driver's license and, if required, a selfie compared with it.

Privacy

  • Consent comes first. Without it, the test does not start.
  • The camera video and still photos are not sent to any AI provider.
  • We do not create voiceprints or face templates from test recordings.
  • Recordings, still photos and transcripts follow a three year retention schedule from the date of the test. Then the recordings and still photos are permanently deleted.
  • Identity check images are deleted after 30 days.

The details are in our Privacy Policy.

How tests are bought

  • Bought per Trainee assignment. No subscription.
  • An assignment the Trainee has not started can be cancelled for a full refund.
  • An assignment still unstarted when its validity period ends is refunded automatically.
  • Completed and scored tests are not refundable.
